With Sparkle Weekend just around the corner, we're spotlighting Transmasculine identities in this month's series of short films. Quite often, heteronormative discourse leaves trans men and Transmasculine identities out of the conversation, and through July's Superbia Cinema programme, we aim to recognise and platform their experiences, artistry and filmmaking expertise.

The Floating World

In the immersive short, co-directors Pablo Curto and Fernando Souza follow protagonist Ryuki as he searches to establish his identity within the realm of Tokyo’s host clubs. As a transgender man who entered the scene on a journey of self-realization – driven by the unwillingness of his family to accept his gender identity – Ryuki finds the role he is prepared to play to satiate the needs of his parents serves as training for the persona he must inhabit in his role as host.

I’m The Only Person Here I've Never Heard Of

Sunniva Moen Rørvik is a choreographer and dance filmmaker who often plays with humor and queer theory in their choreography work. Using the outdoor space as a calm backdrop to an otherwise chaotic and absurd adventure, this short film challenges viewers as to what dance can be. We meet strange characters with exaggerated movements and gestures, and we find ourselves in an exciting gray area between dance and theatre.

Established in 2019, our new Superbia Cinema venue, CULTPLEX, is based in Cheetham Hill close to the city centre. It’s the home of cult films, video games, and cool nerd stuff in Manchester and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them for our future Superbia Cinema screenings!
