Black History Month Film Screening and Community Conversation

An evening of film, discussion, and community! We invite you to join us in celebrating and platforming Manchester’s Black women activists and community change-makers. The event will showcase films made about local black women, exploring the foundations laid and the contributions to life in Manchester.

A specific focus of the evening will be Manchester’s Abasindi Co-Operative – a black women’s co-operative set up in Moss Side in 1980.

This celebratory event will look back at the foundations laid by black women in Manchester, such as those involved in the Abasindi Collective and beyond, and reflect on their legacy and impact today.

Following the films, the audience will be invited to join in with smaller discussions exploring themes raised in the film and sharing contemporary stories

There will be refreshments and West African light bites served from 6-6.30pm.

Film one: Women of the Soil

Film two: TBC

The theme of Saluting our Sisters highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. This year’s celebration will showcase pioneering black women who have made remarkable contributions to literature, music, fashion, sport, business, politics, academia, social and health care, and more. Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite countless contributions to society, the achievements of Black women, in particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten. That is why, this year, we Black History Month UK is celebrating the exceptional achievements of Black women.

The theme of Before Windrush examines the lives of Black Britons who were living in the UK before the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948. Along with exploring the under-reported stories of black doctors and nurses working in healthcare before the NHS.
