For Day With(out) Art 2018 we present a collection of six documentary shorts from Visual AIDS, New York. ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS is the 29th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project, which Superbia is proud to bring to Manchester for the second year. Highlighting the impact of art in contemporary AIDS activism and advocacy, we will screen new short videos from six inspiring community organisations and collectives — ACT UP NY, Positive Women’s Network, Sero Project, The SPOT, Tacoma Action Collective, and VOCAL NY.
ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today’s HIV/AIDS epidemic, including HIV criminalisation, Big Pharma, homelessness, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalised communities. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism, ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists, artists, and cultural workers on the front lines.
The LGBT Foundation screening is free, no registration required, and will take place in The Group Room at 4.30pm. The screening will last approximately 1 hour with time for discussion afterwards. The annual World AIDS Day Vigil takes place in Sackville Park shortly after the screening, beginning at 7pm.
The films will also be screened for free all day on Sat 1 and Sun 2 Dec at AIR Gallery in Altrincham and Castlefield Gallery. We are extremely grateful to these venues for their support.
