Portraits from Manchester's LGBT Foundation
09 Sep - 02 Oct
Here are black-and-white photographic portraits of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and a few allies. Everyone pictured is connected with the LGBT Foundation in Manchester, shown together with their own comments about their lives.
Carole Martin has spent a year photographing and interviewing volunteers for this project, with growing appreciation of the poise and understanding shown by most of her subjects of their own and others' issues. She's impressed by the calm determination of transgender people to move into a different way of living; the wisdom and gentleness with which many LGBT people approached resistant or fearful parents; the devotion of older people in caring for their partners in illness; and occasionally, the unhappiness of having to manage a life that seems almost unmanageable because of public prejudice.
